The professional wrestling industry uses wrestling as a form of staged entertainment that combines choreographed athletic performance/stunts and acting into scripted storylines, much like an episodic live-action television drama. In order to advance the narrative, match outcomes and rivalries are pre-determined/planned within the company, and there are allocated segments for "promos", which are speeches/interactions that wrestlers deliver outside matches.
Storylines consist of character rivalries and individual character arcs/developments. Professional wrestlers portray fictional characters with defining gimmicks, personas, and traits, designed to elicit specific crowd reactions (cheers for "face" characters or boos for "heel" characters). These defining traits and crowd reactions may change over time as characters change or advance through different storylines and rivalries.
While gimmicks may come from a variety of inspirations, wrestling promotions (e.g. WWE, AEW) have frequently used nationality or ethnicity to varying degrees, which directly influences the character's presentation and motivations. Some examples of this are Eddie Guerrero's "Latino Heat" persona, Carlos Colon as "Carlito Caribbean Cool", Hulk Hogan's "Real American" persona, Jinder Mahal's gimmick as "The Modern Day Maharaja", and Roman Reigns as "The Tribal Chief" of his Samoan family dynasty.
